What is Identity Theft?
The short answer is that identity
theft is a crime. Identity theft and identity
fraud are terms used to refer to all types of
crime in which someone wrongfully obtains and
uses another person's personal data in some way
that involves fraud or deception, typically for
economic gain.

Charity /Affinity Fraud
Charity
fraud occurs when an individual or group
deliberately misrepresents its fundraising
intentions or solicits charitable funds for
phony causes. Although the potential for
deceptive fundraising practices by
not-for-profit solicitors increases in the
aftermath of national tragedies and natural
disasters, it is always present.

Credit Card Skimming
Most
cases of credit card fraud involve skimming, a
process where the genuine data on a card's
magnetic stripe is electronically copied onto
another card, without the legitimate
cardholder's knowledge. Skimming normally occurs
at retail outlets - particularly bars,
restaurants and gas stations - where a corrupt
employee skims a customer's card with a small,
hand-held electronic device before handing the
card back, then sells the information on higher
up the criminal ladder where counterfeit cards
are made.
